Health commitment statement

At the University of Lancashire, we are committed to supporting the health, wellbeing, and safety of everyone who uses our facilities. Our Health Commitment Statement outlines what you can expect from us and what we ask of you in return to help create a positive, inclusive and safe environment for all.

Our Commitment to You

  • We will respect your personal choice to make your own decisions about which exercises you can carry out. However, we ask you not to exercise beyond what you consider to be your own abilities.
  • We will make every reasonable effort to make sure that our equipment and facilities are in a clean and safe condition for you to use and enjoy.
  • We will take reasonable steps to make sure that our staff are professionally qualified to sport and fitness industry standards and recognised by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity.
  • If you inform us that you have a disability that puts you at a substantial disadvantage in terms of accessing our equipment and facilities, we will consider which adjustments, if any, are reasonable for us to make.
  • We will promote a culture of respect, inclusivity, and wellbeing.

Your Commitment to Us

  • You must only exercise if you are fit and able to do so and not suffering from illness or injury. Let us know immediately if you feel ill when using our facilities or equipment. Our staff members are not qualified doctors, but there will be someone available who has been trained in first aid. If you know or are concerned that you have a medical condition that might interfere with you exercising safely, before you use our facilities and equipment you should seek advice from a relevant medical professional and follow it.
  • Exercise carries its own risks. When you are exercising, you are responsible for the risks involved. You agree to use our facilities and equipment responsibly, making yourself aware of our code of conduct, and follow all safety guidance and instructions given by our staff. If you are unsure how to use a facility or piece of equipment safely, you will seek advice and guidance from our staff.
  • If you feel that our equipment is faulty, damaged or unsafe to use, you will let us know immediately so that we can rectify the situation or put control measures in place.
  • If you have a disability, follow your own reasonable judgement and the advice of a qualified health professional to exercise safely.
  • You will treat staff and fellow members with respect and consideration.

Together, we aim to foster a community where everyone can enjoy the benefits of physical activity in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment.

This statement is for guidance only. It is not a legally binding agreement between you and us and it does not create any obligations which you or we must meet.
